The Missouri Budget Project is a member of a national network of 31 state organizations known as the State Fiscal Analysis Initiative (SFAI). The SFAI is coordinated by the Center on Budget & Policy Priorities in Washington, D.C.

The SFAI network includes fiscal policy organizations in several of Missouri’s neighboring states, such as Voices for Illinois’ Children and the Iowa Fiscal Partnership, as well as the nation’s largest states including the Fiscal Policy Institute in New York, the California Budget Project and the Center for Public Policy Priorities in Texas.

The SFAI was developed in the early 1990s to respond to continuing reductions in government services for low-income and vulnerable populations. The SFAI activities have intensified as welfare reform and other policy changes have increased states’ responsibilities for social programs while reducing federal funding responsibility for them.

The Center on Budget & Policy Priorities is a nonprofit, nonpartisan research organization and policy institute that conducts research and analysis on a of government policies and programs at the federal and state levels.
