The federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) has proven to be one of the most effective measures in reducing poverty. An EITC boosts local economies while improving long-term health and economic for working families. Twenty-six states and the District of Columbia have state EITCs to build on the success of the federal credit.
Proposals to create a State Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) for Missouri were introduced in the 2016 legislative session: House Bill 1605, sponsored by Representative Mike Kelley (R- District 127), passed the House by a vote of 115-35. The measure didn’t make it through the Senate, but there is great momentum heading into 2017.
